A couple of years ago, I was working on a concept that involved kid spaces and creating inspiring interiors. It came to me that our traditional way of seeing interior design is that the space you create, live and work in, should be a reflection of you—but what I discovered with my project is that it’s far more motivating to create spaces that are aspirational to who you want to become. I don’t only want to live with who I am, but I want to be encouraged by my surroundings to continue to evolve, stretch and grow.

M.E. + YOU & EVERYTHING WE DO

I didn’t know I had a collector’s heart! I love to mix and match antique china for any informal, impromptu occasion I can.

I remember as a young designer reading advice from accomplished interior designers in magazines. Their first wise words of advice were to not buy everything at once and to let a space of collected items unfold around you. The frustration for me then was that I was young, and I did want it all finished then! I wanted my space to look like what I saw in photos and books. It took me many years to really understand this philosophy of space design…one day, I looked around my studio and was like, “aha! I get it!” I saw that I had genuinely surrounded myself with the things that I just loved, with no real thought to aesthetic, but instead, what truly appealed to me—the style I had created was no one’s but my own because it was authentically me.

No space for me would be complete without books, books and more books! I love to surround myself in spaces that feel warm, with a nod to the past, but a curiosity about the future.

To add warmth to drawing and designing, I had a custom built walnut desktop created to replace the usual white drafting table top. Now it feels far more cozy and inviting to sit down and dream. I love to have my daughter in my studio as much as I can encourage her to be there. She has her own little “atelier” with inviting places to play and create, laugh and love.
