There is a famous saying used among Silicon Valley start-ups: “Move fast and break things.” The phrase is attributed to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and subsequently became the battle cry for young entrepreneurs who wanted to disrupt established industries. While this mantra hasn’t transferred word for word into the world of artists, makers, creatives, and designers, I think the breakneck pace and monetary measuring stick of tech unicorns have permeated creative culture. The argument could probably be made that they have permeated all Western culture.
What used to be a hobby is now a side hustle. What used to be an entrepreneur is now an influencer, content creator, and lifestyle brand. What used to be a small business is now an empire, and there is always the push to do more, grow bigger, do it all at a faster pace, and live- stream as much of it as possible. I would like to propose a gentler, kinder, and more soul-friendly mantra to anyone who wants to pursue a delightfully fulfilling creative life: Move slow and make things.
