An aptitude for words and languages led me to study French and German at university and to then work as commissioning editor for Oxford Dictionaries rather than pursuing an artistic career. But textiles have been part of my life from an early age. As for many of us, it was other creative women in my family who encouraged my making and passed on skills. My grandmother was a prolific and inventive knitter, and the many hours I spent exploring her yarn stash and watching her create complicated patterns led to my love of fiber and a fascination with the magic of constructing fabric.
