I’m pretty new to this, as I’m only four months old, but in the short time with my new family, I believe I’ve made a considerable contribution. My name is Rufus, and my new creative partner is Tina, an accomplished quilter and a sales representative for a quilting cotton manufacturer. I think she’s been quilting for over 10 years, but that’s way before my time.
I joined my new family along with my twin sister, Athena, in early August. I’m a male orange tabby, and Athena is a grey tiger, but those differences are only fur deep. We love each other and play and nap together. We’re pretty much inseparable.
I’m learning what it takes to become a quilter’s helper, and here are my accomplishments so far:
I’ve helped Tina with her social media (IG @Saffronandpear and @Littlebluecottage), primarily by walking across her computer’s keyboard. I’m still learning which keys go with which letters to make words. I don’t think I’m succeeding, as she’s constantly erasing my writing.
Tina spends a lot of time on her sewing machine; all I can see is the thread bobbin spinning around. I figure that if she wants it to happen, I should assist. So while playing around the sewing machine with my sister, I’ll grab the thread and drag it across the room, spinning the bobbin very quickly. I must have this wrong, as Tina doesn’t seem to appreciate my efforts.
There are times when we do work together. I like it when Tina listens to ’80s music, especially the Thompson Twins, Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, and, of course, the Stray Cats.
When Athena and I have stopped playing, our favorite place to nap is on one of Tina’s unfinished quilts. We prefer the ones filled with wool batting as it’s the warmest and coziest.
As a fabric rep, Tina needs to travel often. Good thing my new human dad and his daughter are around to ensure we’re well taken care of. I wouldn’t say I like it when Tina leaves, so I try to give her a hint by sitting in her open suitcase as she packs. Again, she still hasn’t gotten the hint.
The best part, though, is when she comes home as we get lots of love, petting and snuggles and maybe even a gift she picked up in her travels. It’s a pretty good life for a creative cat.
