I picked up a camera in my 20s and really never put it down. I didn’t think about why I wanted to photograph things; it was as natural as breathing. I saw so many things that excited me that I had to capture and retain them. And, it provided unanticipated benefits. I am basically a shy person—or was—and to spend time behind a lens was calming, taught me to see and inspired curiosity. It also provided something to talk about. It turned out that I had some ability.
