Appalachian Baby Design / Diane Browning

We are a collective of fiber artists based in the Greenbrier Valley, a rural community in the Allegheny Mountains of Appalachia. Led by Diane Browning, our group consists of knitters, crocheters, weavers and dyers. Our design direction centers on crafters who want to make a keepsake handmade gift to celebrate a new child and their family, with ecological yarns that are easy care.

Diane has worked to source fibers from the U.S., primarily organic cotton from small-scale, family-owned cotton farms. The cotton is processed by U.S. mills and custom twisted to keep it soft. It is then dyed using a low-impact dye process. Recently, we added U.S. washable wool sourced from the Shaniko Wool Company, which is certified with the Responsible Wool Standard, a third-party audit of sustainable land and animal practices.

We offer over 100 knit, crochet and woven designs using our yarns that range from beginner projects to intermediate; and provide technical support to aid the crafter through the project. Our yarns and kits can be found in local yarn shops in the U.S. and Canada. We also operate an online store at www.AppalachianBaby.com.

Our intent is to support American land, farmers, the U.S. textile industry and handcrafters everywhere.
