We got to know Ukrainian American textile artist Larysa Bernhardt in 2021 when she appeared in our fall issue of WHAT Women Create and shared the story of her beautiful, tactile winged creatures — “symbols of absolute freedom,” she calls them — made from sumptuous vintage textiles. These days, she’s still creating her exquisite moths and butterflies, as well as sacred hearts that are inspired by her collection of antique ex-votos — or milagros. “Everything I do in real life makes its way into art I create,” she shares.
