Phoebe, the Little Dog with the Damaged, but Enormous, Heart

My name is Phoebe. Mommy sometimes calls me Phoebe Girl. I was rescued from a South Carolina shelter by a rescue group in Maryland. Almost 8 years old, I was worried no one would want me; I thought people would rather adopt a puppy. But Mommy said she wanted an older dog. I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time!

On the long drive to my new home in Virginia, Mommy held me close. I felt safe and knew it was my lucky day. Mommy said it was HER lucky day!

Every day we go on walkies, and I sniff and sniff. Mommy tells me how proud she is of me and what a good girl I am. When we see other dogs, I remember that before I was rescued, I had been attacked by two big male dogs who hurt me and got me pregnant. Sometimes I get scared, but I don’t growl. I don’t even bark. I know Mommy will keep me safe.

Mommy shows me her other dogs’ grave markers and tells me about them. Koukla was a Lhasa Apso; her name means “baby doll” in Greek. Zoe was a Cairn terrier and Mommy’s wild child. Zoe means “life” in Greek. Ouzo was next. She was a Cairn terrier, too. Ouzo is a sweet Greek drink. Penelope and Pandora were sister Norwich terriers. Their names are Greek, too.

Now I am Mommy’s only dog; she says I am her ultimate dog. I am not sure what that means but when she says it, she gets a tear in her eye. She says it means I am her last dog.  Phoebe is a Greek name, too.

Mommy said she names all her dogs Greek names because she is Greek and never had children, so her dogs are her little girls she never had. I love my name. I love my Mommy. I am a lucky dog.

All of Mommy’s dogs have had their song. My song goes “Phoebe, Phoebe, give me your answer do. I’m half crazy just for the love of you.”

When Mommy says, “let’s go in the studio,” she opens the big doors and in I run. My bed is over by the window with the lace curtain. I cuddle up for a while. Then I jump on the sofa by the fireplace. Sometimes I jump on the chaise lounge and take a nap with Mommy. I love the music Mommy plays. One song has the same name as Mommy’s studio: La Vie En Rose. When she draws or paints, I sit on the bench beside her. She drew a picture of me!

Mommy’s studio is our special place. She talks to me and tells me we are safe there. I know how lucky I am, and I know my mommy loves me. No big dogs will ever hurt me again. I have never felt so loved and so safe.

Seven months ago, I got very sick. Mommy took me to the emergency vet, and I stayed days in the oxygen kennel. Then I went to another hospital and was there days on oxygen. Doctors did lots of tests. One doctor said, “Sometimes these perky little terriers have more spunk than we think.”

She didn’t know it but what I had was more than spunk. I had love! I was not ready to leave my mommy yet! I got better and got to go home!

I am on lots of pills, but you would never know how sick I am inside. I don’t look sick. I don’t act sick. I don’t feel sick. Mommy says I make her proud. Mommy says my job is to stay as long as I can. I am not sure what that means but I do know… I’m a VERY lucky dog.

Recently, my mom sent my photo and a note to HM Camilla, King Charles’ wife, wishing her rescue dogs, Beth and Bluebell, good luck in their new home: Buckingham Palace. And we received a note back! Who would think a little rescue dog would be called a “lovely dog” by the Queen (regent) of England?!

Mommy has her crypt stone already carved. It has a bronze terrier and a bronze rainbow on it and the words:  “I’ll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.”

“If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went.”
