When I think of my mother’s father in Germany, I see an elegant man in a full suit—vest and silk pocket scarf included—rain or shine, Monday to Monday. Whenever we visited him in his shop for custom-tailored gentlemen’s clothing, he would peek over his glasses, a measuring tape around his neck, and a pincushion hugging his wrist.
