Making Chess to Impress

Cyrice Griffith is passionate about art, architecture and design—and she channels that passion into creating one-of-a-kind chess and checker sets that celebrate both the games and the spirit of artistic adventure. Between moves, Griffith took time to give us a look into her process—including her hunt for materials, creators who inspire her, and what drives her to continually rearrange her space.

What drew you to creating chess and checker sets?

It started with a gift—a set I designed for my son when he was nine, after he taught me how to play. I discovered that playing chess together created time and space for us to engage in meaningful conversation and reflection. His response to that first set evolved into a much deeper practice. With each new creation, I found myself reimagining the board as a landscape for connection.
