Catching Up With … Maria Shanina
We met designer and artist Maria Shanina in early 2023, when we featured her beautiful, ethereal work in WHAT Women Create. Maria, who is based in Ottawa, Ontario, creates delicate — and memorable — textile works by painting directly on silk and then, she says, “carefully and meticulously” disassembling these paintings to form new compositions. “In the experimentation with silk and silk dyes, I finally found what I was looking for — the contrast of dynamic monochromatic compositions and the soft surface, authentic expression in a traditional medium,” she shared.
