
I like to have my hands in a lot of different pots. As a child, I had many creative interests—painting, pottery, dance, singing, and creative writing. I loved being able to choose whatever suited me in the moment or helped me express my ideas. When I got to college, I experienced significant angst choosing a career path and changed my major several times. Being a jack of all trades felt like a liability, and I often wished that I was a master of one—a piano protégé or math whiz—to focus me. I’ve realized in subsequent decades that I don’t have to choose in the way I thought I did, and that living creatively means synthesizing ideas and interests across disciplines.
