Ever since I can remember, photographs have fascinated me. As a precocious kid who learned to read at age 2, I vividly recall my early years being immersed in my parents’ books about silent film stars. The bold makeup, lavish costumes, and scandalous stories of those glamorous figures fueled my imagination. A few years later, my dad became a volunteer curator at our town’s historical museum, introducing me to antique photographs, vintage cameras, and a fascinating stereoscope. I spent countless afternoons absorbed in those stiff yet intriguing vignettes, imagining what the people were thinking, what their lives were like, and longing to step into their world. Nearly forty years later, I can still close my eyes and recall those images clearly.
