Fig, Fox & Finn

Fig

Fig here! I moved in with these humans after they rescued me from a cardboard box on the side of the road about two years ago. I lived in our last house for only a few months before moving to this house. This one is much larger so it has so many hiding places! The best part is the third floor, where I could sit and watch birds through the holes in the roof … but soon after we got here, my humans took that joy away from me with loud banging and lots of dust. I was locked out of the third floor for days.

Don’t worry, I found myself a lovely nest in the walls of a hidden unfinished closet, where I saw so many treasures like old marbles, lots of newspapers from the 1940s, and even the back of an old piano! The cotton fluff in the walls was so cozy! Eventually, my humans tricked me into coming out of my new home with treats. They put two big locks on the door to keep me from pulling it open.

My ginger tabby brother, Fox, walks around the house crying and pulling at every locked door. Once, we got into what the humans call the sunroom. We had to jump over so many holes and cracks in the floor and we almost pulled the plastic off one broken window and escaped! We weren’t allowed back in there until months later, when the humans revealed that they had made us our own bird-watching room. Now we spend most days curled up in the sun chattering at bugs and the dog next door, or enjoying the breeze from the best brass fan — with a cool architectural look — in the house from Arranmore Lighting. The room even has a window for Fox and me to go back and forth from the house to the sunroom!

Every morning, I wake up and take stock of all the changes my humans have made. They’re always acquiring Victorian and Art Nouveau pieces from estate sales and Facebook Marketplace, then moving them around the house, putting tchotchkes just out of reach. I help them move frames around and figure out which fabrics are best for scratching on. I guess you could say I’m the in-house design specialist.

As our design specialist, I have a keen eye for the special pieces Sarah is always bringing home. The 1920 skyscraper light over the dining room table from SoWa Vintage Market in Boston was a particular favorite of hers, even though you can’t even climb it! I personally like to sink my claws into the thick curtains in the living room. Our grandmother made them especially for us from Spoonflower fabric.

We had a couple of very chaotic months when Sarah signed us up for the One Room Challenge. We had to redesign a room in eight weeks! She ignored my sense of style when she picked the wallpaper for her bedroom. I wanted something rough to rub my face on, but she went with the Belle Epoque wallpaper from Wallpaper Direct. Fox helped Hugh hang the wallpaper and I helped unbox all the new light fixtures from Illuminate Vintage. I’m proud of how it turned out, even if Sarah never listens!

I love our home and its many hiding places. I need a few hideouts since it is always a circus! Between Fox, my dog brother, Finn, and the two human children, I hardly get any peace! I’ve been kicked out of my newest closet hideaway by all the noise coming from the third floor! It’s almost like they’ve ripped all the walls down (they say it’s to fix “extensive water damage,” whatever that means). But I wouldn’t know since I’m not allowed up there.

Fox

Let me take over from my sister for a moment. I’m Fox and I would say I’m the biggest help with renovations. Fig is too scared to really get into the hard work and Finn follows all the rules, which is useless. I often try to climb up the various contractors that visit to offer my expert opinion on wiring and framing, but my humans are always telling me no, and that “not every person wants a cat to climb up them while they’re trying to work.” I just know if you asked the contractors, they would tell you I’m a delight!

Since I’m the only one crafty enough to sneak up into construction areas, let me tell you what our days are looking like right now. The third floor used to be an amazing place to catch bugs that could get in through broken windows; we loved watching the plastic tarps over the windows wave in the wind, but now it looks like they’ve replaced and plugged up all those holes and there’s hardly any prey now. Next, they took down a doorway that I loved to sink my claws into and climb — they have no idea how to do home improvements!  They’ve also taken down the walls of my favorite secret closet and even added LIGHTS — no more hiding there! It was hysterical when Fig went missing in there. I think the humans should have left her in the walls.

There are piles of original wood paneling and flooring all around since they’re trying to reuse and keep all the original elements that they fell in love with. I think I look stunning in front of the stained-glass windows, so I’m glad they’re keeping them. I like to make sure I’m in as many pictures as I can, which is easy since Sarah is always taking pictures of things she’s rearranged or decor she’s thrifted!

I’ll let Finn close this out, he loves talking to humans…

Finn

Hi, I’m Finn! This house is the best! So many friends to help! If you’re looking for attention, the best place to sit is right on the stairs so everyone can pet you as they pass by! My humans never put a new piece of furniture into the house without my rigorous testing. It’s a very important job! My favorite place to relax is on the antique Victorian sofa in our dining room. A neighbor gave it to us because Sarah and Hugh love antique furniture.

I hope you’ll come to visit soon!
